HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN root keys stored the settings used to control system and the software. Because these Settings are set for Windows users, so it have no relationship with specific users, it is a public information, you just need to made an understanding of it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE including the following five keys:
HARDWARE subkey:
This subkey store some information about hypertext terminal, math co-processor and serial port,etc. HARDWARE subkey consist of two sub-keys DEVICEMAP (for storage device image), DESCRIPTION
(store the system information). Hierarchy of DEVICEMAP subkey as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/SERIALCOMM
it consist of the following set under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/SERIALCOMM
* COM1 = COM1: COM1 port specified.
* COM2 = COM2: COM2 port specified.
Hierarchy of DESCRIPTION subkey as follows:

* SAM sub-key: The system automatically protected it.
* SECURITY subkey: Contains the security settings, the system also protected it.
* SOFTWARE subkey: contains the system software, application software currently installed and the user information.
* SYSTEM subkey: The sub-key store the information which is used to restart and repair systems,including the description of each driver and configuration information. System subkey only have one subkey CurrentControlSet, the system kept the information of current driven process control under the subkey. The following are Control and Services subkeys under CurrentControlSet.
Control subkey
This subkey saved the information of each icon settings in Control Panel. As each icon program in the Control Panel will write information in different sub-key, so it's better not modify the information through the Registry Editor, otherwise it's easy to cause system crashes.
(1) fontassoc subkey
The sub-key stored the font information (such as default font, etc.).
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / fontassoc branch and two sub-keys
Associated DefaultFonts, Associated CharSet.
Associated DefaultFonts subkey
In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / fontassoc / Associated
DefaultFonts branch has the following settings:
* AssocSystemFont = simsun.ttf: definition of system fonts. simsun.ttf TrueType Times New Roman font for the document.
* FontPackageDontCare = Times New Roman: The following lines set the font packages installed(FontPackage), in Win3.x, these settings in Wifeman.ini file [FontPackages] section are listed.
* FontPackageRoman = Times New Roman
* FontPackageSwiss = Times New Roman
* FontPackageModern = Times New Roman
* FontPackageScript = Times New Roman
* FontPackageDecorative = Arial Associated CharSet sub-key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / fontassoc / Associated CharSet branch is some settings of the system font.
(2) Nls subkey
The sub-key in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / Nls branch, which is used to set the Windows language features such as code page, EUDC code within the scope of language classification.
(3) SessionManager subkey
The sub-session key for the management system, which consists of three primary keys and eight sub-keys.
